Does anyone have repair guides for dead c128's?

I'm getting no video at all. It was running ok while it was apart. I turned it after putting the shielding back on and nothing happened apart from a warm smell. It could be something easy, or it could be all the chips on the board got fried.

I'm sure someone else has diagnosed this type of thing before, so what pointers are there?

Troubleshooting and repairing your Commodore 128 by Art Margolis is fantastic and highly recommended.

Ray Carlsens repair article is also handy

In the mean time, can you see anything that's visibly burnt on the C128 board or power supply?

No, I did suspect the power supply because the fan ran slow for a few seconds before speeding up when it went.
There does seem to be 5v coming off the connector though.

As the book is out of print and is nearly 20 years old, does anyone have a pdf?
Or a copy for sale.

Ray Carlsens list is ok, but it's not really diagnostic & as so many chips are soldered then swapping everything out to try it is going to be a right pain.

Ready.

I have the book at home; I bought it from ebay last year and it's real good. I planned to scan it but...350+ pages are way much work. Still I want to scan it, just gimme time.....

In the meanwhile I suggest you look at ebay or even Amazon, from time to time they do have commodore repair books kicked out of some library and sold.

By the way, Art Mangolis's book is for C128, so a bit different layout than C128D.

BR,
Ready.

I have a C128D not a C128DCR, so the board layout is exactly the same.
There are differences in the power & keyboard connector. Also the C128D has a drive reset switch and the C128 has a power switch but the PCB is exactly the same ( compared to my flat C128 anyway )

350 pages is a lot, but it would be much appreciated.

Any luck on your repair?
