My 1581 is really starting to annoy me now ... I can;t run it with the case on.

If the case is on a screwed in it powers on fine, but when you try to access a disk the light flashes and then I get a not ready status come back.

If the case is removed then it all works fine!

I'm sure it's a case of something somewhere is being flexed (or unflexed) when the case is screwed down, but I can't see where it would be.

Any guesses of what to look at ?

Mark

  • Verify that a connector is not being partially unplugged from the drive mechanism.
  • Verify that the drive mechanism is not being subjected to torsion or misalignment when the cover is screwed down tight.
  • Verify that the cover isn't pressing against the top of the drive mechanism, which would interfere with head movement.

Might be some other possibilities, but those immediately come to mind.

To that I would add:

  • Ensure that screws are not so long that they pass through the floppy disk.
  • Ensure that lid does not pinch scrotum of small demon who lives inside 1581 and makes it work.
