I find myself using my PC laptop less and less for my "at home" computing.  In fact, aside from my not-so-humble 128 setup all I have is my "IBM clone"  ;)  laptop which I primarily use for work.  I find myself using my android for just about everything internet related.

But I'm having problems posting in these forums from my android.  When I click on the text box to enter the text for the post, it doesn't respond.  It's obviously a problem with the browser.

Does anyone here post from an android?

Hi guys.  I have a swiftlink and a USR 28.8 sportster (as the post title suggests).  Unfortunately I don't have the documentation for this USR modem.  I found dox on the USR website for the 33.6k sportster which I figure can't be too different.  The really important thing is the list of AT commands - and I figure those will pretty much be the same for the 28.8 and 33.6 sportster.

I would like to get it working.  I tried to configure it for my Cnet 128 system - but no luck so far.  I tried to get it working on Novaterm 10 and Desterm 2.0 as well.  Not happening.  The modem goes TR (terminal ready) and the lights for send/recieve data do flash during initialization through Cnet, Novaterm, etc.  But when I try to dial out the modem just makes a "CLICK" noise and that's about it.

I'm sure I have some guys defaults set in my NVRAM (I bought this modem used a few weeks ago).  I would like to set up NVRAM as per my C128D - but it seems a bit tricky.

I found an article in CW#14 by Max Cottrell (in the "SysOp's Corner") in which the author touts the use of USR modems with swiftlink for a BBS.  He gives his settings, and I have tried those.  But I think he is using a 14.4k (though this is not explicitly stated in the article).  I know that Eric Pearson mentioned in the Cnet 7.0 documentation that he was able to run Cnet128 stable at 28.8k with a swiftlink + ?? modem (I forget what he used).

Any advice is appreciated.

Software / CNET 128 question
November 27, 2010, 12:36 PM
So I have spent the last few weeks playing with Cnet 128 v7.2.  It is a spectacular piece of software.  I remember playing with earlier versions of Cnet 128 back in the early 90's.  It sure did mature from what I recalled from back then.

I have read the doumentation from beginning to end a couple of times.  It is extremely well documented.  In the documentation there are several references to a future v7.5.  One of the planned updates in this "future version" was an environment that allowed for access to LU's above 9.  (I'm talking about hard drive partitions).  Was such a version ever released?  That would be an enhancement of epic proportions.

General chat / Commodore User's Group
November 01, 2010, 02:59 AM
So I have spent time looking through the lists maintained by Jim and others over the years regarding active (and defunct) commodore users groups.  Many moons ago when I was a teenager I was active in a commodore users group in south florida.  (Treasure Coast area).  Most groups have long since disbanded.

Does anyone know of an (active) commodore users group in the central florida area?  I can't seem to find one, and I'm tempted to try and start one.  Even though I have no idea how to undertake such a task  :)

Gaming / TAC CMD ports
October 27, 2010, 12:51 PM
A while back there was a website maintained by the German group TAC.  They did an amazing job of porting software to be run on CMD hardware.  A lot of the ports were PAL, but I found quite a few ports that worked just fine and were stable on my NTSC machine.  Unfortunately (about a year or so ago) the site changed a bit and the software vanished.

Does anyone know if this software (i.e., the TAC versions of the software) are still available?

Herdware / CMD HD power supply replacement
October 27, 2010, 11:43 AM
Hi guys.  I have the stock (knock on wood, still working) power supply for my CMD HD.  The older, switchable stock PS.  I want to have a backup PS.  The stock PS I have is rated 12V @ 1A and 5V @ 4.5A.  One of the replacements I'm looking at does 12V @ 1A and 5V @ 2A.  I remember reading somewhere on the internet (I have since searched and couldn't find the post) that the 5V line was for the drive mechanism itself and the 12V line ran the contoller (more or less).  Hence the current drawn at 5V will depend on the particular drive mechanism used.  I checked out my quantum mech and my seagate mech and neither specify a maximum drawn current.

Is 5V @ 2A sufficient or am I inviting trouble?

Herdware / Alternative Ramlink-HD parallel cable
October 15, 2010, 02:24 PM
I would really like to get my hands on a Ramlink-HD parallel cable.  I don't know much about these cables outside of having read the pinouts in the CMD HD and Ramlink users guide.  Oh - that and I know they are as rare as most CMD hardware nowadays.  Does anyone know of another computer/device which used such a cable?  Is there an alternative cable which was used back in the 90's that might be easier to get?

Thanks.

Herdware / 1351 mouse question
August 29, 2010, 06:36 AM
Hi guys.  So I recently picked up a 1351 that seems to work great and is in great cosmetic condition.  I have tested it with my GEOS 2.0 setup in proportional mode.  I have also tested it in joystick mode and used it to play Death Knights of Krynn for a while.

But it seems to have a quirk.  If it's plugged into joystick port #1 - upon bootup I can use the mouse to create "effects" in the screen editor (but only if I move the mouse and press the buttons).  Make the cursor jump around a bit, produce character outputs, etc. If I boot it in joystick mode (in port #1) this doesn't happen.  It also doesn't seem to happen in joystick port #2.

Any thoughts?

Tom

Update: I have another question. If I boot my 128D into 128 mode, put my 1351 in joystick mode and GO64 into 64 mode to play a game,  it appears that the 1351 is still in joystick emulation mode.  Is this true in general?

Anyone here ever successfully install maverick v5.04 on a 1541 emulation partition?  I know the stock copy has a mild form of protection on it, so a a simple mcopy won't work.  Maybe there is a version out there which has been retooled for a native partition?  I have seen many "cmd cracks" out there, but they are mostly games.  And most of those cracks are for PAL.

Herdware / CW #25 hardware hack for the 1581
March 02, 2010, 07:39 AM
I have a couple of 1581's.  A few months ago one of my drive mechs failed.  I decided to take the board (which I knew worked - I tested with another Chinon mechanism) and modify it according to the article in CW#25.  It was a simple mod.  I cut 2 traces and soldered on 3 jumpers.  I have full confidence the board was modified as per the article.  I have tried a couple of high density mechanisms.  Most of them were pretty modern and I realized I needed a mechanism with both HD an DD for this to work.  I haven't found a drive that works - though I have only tried 3 mechanisms.  My question to you guys is - has anyone used this hack to replace the drive with a more modern mechanism, and if so, do you have recommendations on the mechanism type?  Thanks.

Herdware / CMD HD drive replacement
February 28, 2010, 02:42 AM
I had the good fortune of acquiring a working cmd hd unit.  I need to replace the drive.  Does the cmd hd unit use a standard 50 pin SCSI 1 type drive?  I am aware of the 4 gig (254 partition * 65K blocks) limit for total system capacity.  While I have never used a cmd hd before, I have been using a ramlink for about 5 moths now (a wonderful little device) and I have read through the cmd hd users manual in the past.  All I need now is a parallel cable.  I found this drive on ebay.  Do you guys think this drive would do the trick?

Thanks for your time.

My question goes to the obvious functions for which this applies (JMP [TRIG/INV. TRIG/LOG]).  Does the c128 use a type of Taylor series expansion to evaluate these functions?  Has anyone seen literature/documentation on writing optimized mathematics code with an 8502?

Thanks.
