General chat / Great Australian Internet Blackout?
January 27, 2010, 11:46 AM
Is this true? Does Australia really plan to "censure" the internet? Wow, sounds like China!!

Woo Hoo! I just picked up a C64 with power supply and box off Craigslist Saturday! Good thing I had the guy bring it to my work, what a whack job!! He wanted $29, I asked if he was firm on it, he says $25, I say will you take $20? Sure. Its case is yellowed, but I'm going to try that "RETROBRITE" concoction and try and bring her back! Like I said, the guy was a whack job, he didn't like a $20 bill I gave him, it had a small tear in it. Oh, sorry let me give you a different one I just got from the ATM! This dude holds it up to the light to see if its real and then asks if I have a pen to check the bill!!! What a freak!
Anyhow, the C64 works, I did question its functionality in bartering the price, however I did rig up a little 5" tv with an audio cable and a paperclip, and got the boot up screen.
Funny thing is, the guy claimed he was from West Bloomfield, Michigan... which is a rather upper class area. I figured the C64 would have been in pretty damn good condition, and the owner... NORMAL!

So now I have my SX64, C128, and now the C64. I'd like to add a VIC20, a PET, and an Amiga for good measure;)

General chat / Restoring yellowed computer plastic
January 04, 2010, 11:01 AM
I've been doing research on the 'Net about restoring the plastic on old computers. I came across this forum detailing "Retrobrite". I plan to try this on a C64 I picked up on Saturday for $20.

SX64 / SX64 mods
December 31, 2009, 09:45 AM
Anyone have an SX64 and modified it? Looking for some good ideas. So far I took the monitor out of mine and replaced it with an LCD tv. The Floppy controller went bad, so I replaced it with a regular 1541 board (I tried swapping out chips according to Ray Carlsen's page to no avail). I'm actually looking to put a microIEC in it as well. With the LCD TV, I can also hook it up to cable and watch it too, but I need a switch to turn of the SX64 portion to eliminate a little bit of interference.

Anyone know what is going on with this site? Is it possible to find out who owns the rights to it?

Herdware / X1541 cable info
October 29, 2009, 09:32 AM
I use an X1541 cable to download .d64 files onto 5.25 disks, but isn't it possible to store the files on a PC and load the files onto a C64/C128 just as if its a 1541 drive?

Herdware / C128 vs Amiga
August 16, 2008, 12:35 PM
Back in the day when EVERYONE had a C64... Commodore released the C128 and was working on the Amiga. It seemed to me as a teenager, that the C128 and Amiga were trying to compete for the same "turf" (which is untrue). However, I felt the Amiga was more business oriented, and for some reason (probably because of the 3 modes) the C128 was too advanced for some C64 users to upgrade. I got my first C128 last year, and of course I haven't scratched the surface of its capabilities. I guess I had blinders on back in the day and didn't want to upgrade to the C128, my loss. My feeling is that other C64 users thought the same thing. Sure you got backwards compatibility, but the support for 128 mode wasn't there.

General chat / Shifting Gears... Bodywork!
August 16, 2008, 12:12 PM
I have an '85 Iroc-Z Camaro that I'm "restoring". So far I put a remanufactured engine in, and rebuilt the transmission myself. Now, it's on to some bodywork! Michigan isn't very kind to sheetmetal, so I have alot of sanding and bondo work ahead.
I'm sure some of you have projects other than Commodore computers you would like to share!

Herdware / 1581 Drive kit
July 11, 2008, 02:04 PM
Thinking about the 1581 Drive Kit from jppbm.com. Has anyone purchased this kit? How critical is it that you get the recommended drive mechanism?

Auctions et al / 1080 Amiga Monitor on Ebay
July 07, 2008, 11:04 AM
I put a lowball bid on a 1080 Monitor. Anyone know what these have been going for? I could live with a 1702, but the 1080 has the RGB port for the 128. Wish I hadn't tossed my old IBM CGA monitors awhile back, they might have worked with a 128.

General chat / Went to scrapyard today...
April 23, 2008, 01:44 PM
OK, it's not totally Commodore related, but I visited a new scrapyard in Detroit. If you're familiar with the area, it's at Livernois and Warren near Mexicantown, called Parts Galore. I was there to get some goodies for an '85 Camaro Iroc-Z that I own. 1985 was the first year for the Iroc-Z Camaro, and a good year for Commodore as well. They were riding on the success of the C-64 and rolling out the C128. Chevrolet was trying to capitalize on the success of the International Race Of Champions Series. In 1986, I went to an Iroc race with my father at Mid-Ohio(road course). At that race, I met Bobby Rahal. He didn't win the race(Al Unser Jr. did), but he went on to win Indy and the Cart Championship!
I got a pretty solid door (driver's side, mine had cancer and a nast dent by the mirror) and some misc. stuff. I like the "U Pick" places the best, it's cool to check out the cars, much like checking out Commodores. The engine is rebuilt and I rebuilt the transmission myself, soon I'llbe working on the body.

General chat / Did I miss anything?;)
April 15, 2008, 02:09 PM
Haven't been around checking the forum lately. I got on a new quest to link my Sega Dreamcast to a PC via a direct modem to modem connection thereby utilizing the PC's broadband internet. I've read its been done before, but so far no luck. Getting a Commodore online is easier! :)
The weather is trying to get warmer here in Michigan, and I'm itching to work on my 1985 Iroc-Z Camaro... I put a rebuilt engine in and rebuilt the transmission myself last summer, now I need to do some bodywork. Yeah, I'm a cross between a "Computer Geek" and a gearhead, and I dig it!

General chat / Who is Bil Herd?
March 01, 2008, 01:53 PM
And how did he create the last computer with a "personality"? Any PC or Apple today is generic. The Commodore had a life of it's own. I read the "On the Edge" book, but I'm still intrigued how Mr. Herd found his way into the world of Commodore. Perhaps he needs to write an autobiography, I'm sure alot of Commodore enthusiasts would find it a good read. I would like to know more about his path from high school dropout, to the man behind one of the most advanced 8 bit computers of all time.

Herdware / 128 video output to PC
January 18, 2008, 11:16 AM
I found an older video capture card for my PC, found a driver online, and hooked the C128 up to it. Not too shabby, but it doesn't have audio. Aparrently, I have to run the audio through my sound card. It's pretty cool to have my C128 next to my PC keyboard and "share" the same monitor:).

Herdware / RGBI to Component video on TV?
December 30, 2007, 01:33 PM
I just got my C128 (I know, 22 years late!!), and have been tinkering with video setups. RF clearly stinks. I got a monitor cable, and combined the luma and composite out and hooked it up to AV on my TV. It worked, but had "shadows" in 128 mode. In C64 mode, it was nice and sharp. Must be a quirk with the 8563!
Now for the good(?) part. Would it be possible to make an RGB cable to connect to component video on a TV?

Herdware / Commodore Reloaded BBS
December 28, 2007, 12:36 AM
The Commodore Reloaded BBS is up. I tested it from my work computer (don't tell anyone!) using hyperterminal. You can log on at commororereloaded.servebbs.com. It's really no frills, I just want to try out my setup until I get my C128 to run it on. Currently it's an Ivory BBS, and I hope to try out a different BBS program in the future.
