From: Fredrik Ramsberg

I have released a new version of Adventure, 350 point version. The game was
originally released in 1977, and was one of the very first text adventure games.

There are plenty of hints and walkthroughs available online, e.g. this should work
perfectly: https://mipmip.org/advfamily/Universal350.html

This specific version was built with the Inform 6 language and the PunyInform text
adventure library. It is very close to the original in terms of game play - it has
the same rooms, same objects, same NPCs etc. Type HELP in the game to learn more
about the history of the game.

This version has been optimized for performance on 8-bit computers, and includes
disk images for dozens of platforms, including the C64, C128, Plus/4, PET, Vic 20
(fully expanded), MEGA65 and Commander X16.

The C64 and C128 versions can use an REU for caching the game if you have one, so
there's no disk access during game play. The C128 version is playable in either 40
or 80 columns, uses the extra RAM and the 2 MHz CPU speed.

The game is in Z-code format, Infocom's virtual machine that was used to release
Zork, Planetfall, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy etc for many different platforms.
The game file is ~80KB, and the game motor ("Z-code interpreter") uses virtual
memory to make it possible to play it on platforms with as little as 32 KB of RAM.
More RAM makes for less pauses for loading data though.

(snip)

You'll find the game at https://microheaven.com/advent/

Greetings, C= and Ami aficionados, from warm California!

In just one week, we will have the seventh, annual Commodore Los Angeles Super Show!  CLASS 2026 is coming to the Burbank VFW hall at 1006 W. Magnolia Blvd. in downtown Burbank, California.  Our two-day event is packed with Commodore and Amiga computers and packed with special presentations from our guest speakers.  Have a look at

https://www.portcommodore.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=class:presentations_guests

We're still rounding up more freebies, door prizes, and raffle prizes!  So, our prize webpage will continue to get updated.

To defer the cost of the room, admission to the show is $25 cash, check, or Paypal, and that's whether you come for one day or both days.

Remember to check out our CLASS commercial 2026 found at

https://youtu.be/uEQj5Aglnx4

Come to CLASS and commiserate with fellow Commodorians/Amigans, play around with computers, listen to the presentations, and ask questions!

I bought the C64 version of this game but now have discovered that there is a relatively new C128 version!  Both C64 and C128 versions of H.E.R.O. Is Back can be downloaded at

https://lowcarb.itch.io/hero-is-back-c64

In the comments on that page, the program's creator gives a few more details about the C128 version.

Programmer Richard Goedeken is set to show off his new C128 game at the April 25-26 Commodore Los Angeles Super Show 2026!  He says that the secret, unnamed game is "using the high resolution video port to display 640x480 in 16 colors, VGA resolution!"  He also says, "The game almost certainly won't be finished by CLASS but it's playable even now and it's fun."

Greetings, everyone!
I just got confirmation of this yesterday.  Our hands-on exhibit has been approved for the Feb. 28 Science Carnivale at California State University Fresno, College of Science and Mathematics.  We will be displaying Commodore, Amiga, and other computers at our table, Classic Fresno Area Computers! (CFAC!).
      Here are the facts:

Date: February 28, 2026

Time: 12 noon to 2:30 pm

Location: Science II Courtyard (northern end of California State University campus at the Science II buildings, N. Barstow and E. Maple Aves., Fresno, California, USA)

Though it's not a lengthy event, we'll squeeze as many computers as we can at our table - C128, Ultimate 64, classic Amiga, AmigaOne A1222+, and others (Tandy, Atari).
If you are in the Fresno area, come and visit the Science Carnivale.  Admission and parking is free.

128 programmers / Automatic Proofreader v3.0
January 21, 2026, 06:20 PM
In the January 2026 issue of the new Compute!'s Gazette magazine, Automatic Proofreader v3.0 was released as a type-in program.  Consisting of about 60 lines in BASIC 2.0, v3.0 "is a universal tool, intelligently detecting whether you are typing on a Commodore 64, VIC-20, C128, or Plus/4.  It seamlessly hooks into the operating system to provide real-time checksums for every line of BASIC you enter, using a version of the tried-and-true algorithm from the February 1986 version."

Automatic Proofreader will now be able to help those programmers who are typing in the Commodore type-in listings from the magazine.

PET hardware / Re: PET Joystick Adapter
January 21, 2026, 06:18 PM
Quote from: Blacklord on January 20, 2026, 06:25 AM...found on zimmers.net (https://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/pet/games/english/joy/index.html).

The Coyote Electronics pin configuration is also called "PET User port adapter" in the VICE emulator, so it is expected to be wide spread. Space Invader + is the completed pin configuration of the previously mentioned games and can also be found on the "stupid PET tricks" adapter.

I have the older Stupid PET Tricks adapter, but I didn't know about the Zimmers' list of PET joystick games.

Thanks!

  • BASIC 7.80 (graphics from BASIC now operate on 80-column)
On a side note, the January 2026 of the new Compute!'s Gazette magazine has a review and comparison of several BASIC enhancements for the C64.

Hmm, how many were there for the C128?  :)
