Herdware / Anyone know much about the IDE64 ?
January 27, 2010, 07:23 PM
Cause mine arrived ;-)

Just wondering if I can make it play nice with the 1541U, they almost work properly in a Fotios 3XP expander, but the filemanager in the IDE64 dies horribly when the 1541U is in :-(  Bit of a bummer as it makes filling the IDE64 a bit harder or I have to resort to connecting the laptop up via USB (havn't woked out the ethernet side yet either)

Also can anyone explain how the plugin system works ... I'm sure there is logic to how it is implemented but I havn't grasped it yet, and certainly can;t get it to work!

Herdware / C128 Diagnostics kit ?
October 29, 2009, 06:46 PM
Is there a diagnostics kit for the C128 similar to this one that's for the C64:

http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/~schepers/diagnostic.html

Quite a nice website, has the schematics of it all as well as a ROM dump.

Hi there,

I need to get a bootable disk image that has the required tools on it to format a non-Apple SCSI disk so I can install System7.

Anyone able to help out ?

I have System7 downloaded from Apple but the hard disk I have (40Mb) is to small to install onto, so I have a 2.1GB SCSI one to go in .. of course I have no tools to format said disk.

Help ?

Herdware / LOPT replacement in 1084's ?
June 25, 2009, 08:35 PM
Hi there,

I've been told that my deceased 1084 might be fixed by replacing it's LOPT.

Anyone know what part number that would be ?  Or where to get one ?

Herdware / Bought yet another 1084S
June 25, 2009, 07:14 AM
and yet again it is a different model to the others I've had .. how many types of these bloody things did Commodore make ?!?!

This one has the round DIN connectors on the back and the CVBS / RGB select switch on the front (which is much more handy than having it on the back), the only snag is I don't have an RGBI cable that goes from D9 to DIN .. and I'm not sure what sort of DIN connector it really is.

Anyone know the part number for the connector I need to find ?

so I'm back in the land of 80 columns shortly ... until this one blows up as well!

Herdware / Terrible video quality on LCDs ?
June 19, 2009, 07:35 AM
Hi there,

I've a nice fancy 32" Samsung LCD (1080p etc etc), if I plug in the s-video output of my C128 I get hideous artifacts on screen ... almost like if you encode video with MPEG at a low bitrate.

Anyone else have this issue ?

I've turned off the "dynamic" smarts of the LCD but still the same.

Using the s-video output on a CRT is of course great (apart from the nasty vertical bands on the VIC-II output .. whch seems to be part of the C128)

The LD is also fantastic with other s-video outputs from the DVD player and of course via HDMA and the PS3 with Blu-ray is like comparing VHS to DVD :-)

Herdware / Annoying 1581 issue
March 19, 2009, 09:01 AM
My 1581 is really starting to annoy me now ... I can;t run it with the case on.

If the case is on a screwed in it powers on fine, but when you try to access a disk the light flashes and then I get a not ready status come back.

If the case is removed then it all works fine!

I'm sure it's a case of something somewhere is being flexed (or unflexed) when the case is screwed down, but I can't see where it would be.

Any guesses of what to look at ?

GEOS / What's the best GEOS setup ?
January 21, 2009, 08:10 AM
Hi there,

If I wanted to make a nice GEOS setup what would I need ?

I thinking just the software required on unexpanded 64 or 128 here .. no SuperCPUs involved :-)

Hardware wise I've the 1541U with 4GB and it's 16MB REU so storing lots of D64's is not an issue.

Something I'd like to find are:

Patch to support more than a 512K REU
  RR-Net support ?  (wishful thinking ?)
Patch to support for "not real" 1541 devices (for things like the uIEC or IEC device on the 1541U where there is no 6502 emulated)
  StereoSID player
And any other must have patches/utilities/apps

Any got some good pointers ?

Herdware / NEOS and 1351 mouse differences ?

Anyone know why the NEOS and the 1351 mouse are not compatible ?  (as in software seems to be written for specifically for each)

Herdware / RTC for the C128
January 17, 2009, 06:38 PM
Hiya,

Can someone point out to me why this can't be put into the option ROM socket and provide a real time clock ?

http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/bq4830y.html

Might even be able to load the 32K of RAM with the routines required to use it.

Though I'm thinking setting the time would be awkward ... can you write to the ROM socket ?  Even though a ROM would normaly resist such things, is it still possible to send a write to those addresses ?

Just idle thoughts :-)

GEOS / GEOS 3.3 ?
January 16, 2009, 07:09 AM
Hi there,

I "found" a copy of GEOS 3.3 on the interweb, does anyone know much about this version ?  It's more colourful and has movable windows .. oh and it's in German.

Doesn't see more that 512K of my REU though.

Wonder if I could hexedit it into english ?

General chat / Painting a C64
January 15, 2009, 08:41 AM
Hi all,

I've a few C64 cases and keyboards here that are horribly yellowed, so I'm planning on painting them.

Does anyone know the proper process for painting plastic ?  Do you have to prime them first and what sort of paint would work best ?

Replacement keyboard stickers I'm going to get from http://www.4keyboard.com/

Thanks!

General chat / Online backup service - Mozy
November 12, 2008, 08:10 AM
OK this is a blatent plug to try and get myself more backup space (cause 50gb is not enough ;-)

That aside it is a very good service and works with Windows and OSX

https://mozy.com/?code=ZGDCYB

I used to work for the parent company so actually do trust the service as I know what is behind the scenes.

Serisously though, I would like to get the 1541U and the MMCReplay+RRnet working at the same time in the port expander, anyone know what combination of dip switches I need to use ?  And what ROMs should or should not be loaded in the MMCReplay and 1541U ?

Thanks

Hi there,

Any handy coders around who do me a quick demo ?

I want something that will cycle through all the known screen modes (press a key to continue style stuff) the VDC can do so I can feed it into a little project I'm working on.

Thanks!

Herdware / 1541 Ultimate .. first impressions
April 29, 2008, 01:20 PM
Well I'm impressed :-)

I finally got my C128 near a TV to try out the 1541 Ultimate .. and what a nice toy it is! :-)

Works straight out the wrapper, works in 64 mode, works in 128 mode, gives a nice 16MB REU (the other 16MB is not addressable just yet apparently), gives an emulated 1541 that seems to work pretty good with fast loaders and demos, and gives a device 9 for access the SD card filesystem .. so you can see the D64s.

I've tried it with GEOS 64 (the REU only shows as 512K though ... any patches for that ?)  will give the 128 version a whirl and see if 2Mhz mode works ok.

But to really give it a run I wouldn't mind some 1541 and REU diagnostic tools, something that see if 16Mb really works.

Any good things to try against it ?

Hiya,

Would anyone who lives in the US be able to help me make a purchase ?

I need to get some power connectors for an old Cobalt Qube2 machine, and I can only find Mouser in the US who sell them.

http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=KPPX-3Pvirtualkey51700000virtualkey806-KPPX-3P

I'm basically looking for someone I can have them shipped to and who would  then pop them in an envelope to New Zealand .. otherwise Mouser will charge me US$50 to post something weighing 2 grams :-(

Thanks!

And the bummer is .. I can't test it!!!!  Feckers! :-(

Still looks pretty though :-)

General chat / Do you insure your collection ?
March 12, 2008, 08:49 AM
Here's an interesting question for you.

I've a reasonably nice collection of Commodore gear now, and it would be very hard to replace if it got stolen or destroyed.

How would you describe it to an insurance company to get it covered ?  They'd laugh if I said I want to claim on my insurance cause some 25 year old computer was lost :-)

And what sort of cash value could be assigned to it ?

Thanks!

Herdware / Can a 128 kill it's own monitor ?
February 25, 2008, 02:21 PM
Cause I've just had my 2nd 1084 pack up and die ... same thing as the last one, working fine and then a click, picture goes and a high pitched squeal from the monitor :-(

Not a happy bunny now!  I'd just got my new computer room all set up with the 128 on one side of the room and the Apple and SGI on the other.

Oh and where to get the switch would be handy as well! :-)

General chat / Up and running again!
February 18, 2008, 06:53 AM
Hello,

Well things are back up and running on my C128 again .. it's surprising how much you need the monitor :-)

On other things I've been up to (in no particular order) and only mentioned cause it's quiet around here lately:

Got my FPGA board up and going, going to see if I can get it reading the RGBI output of the C128 and then putting it out as 15Khz VGA (so to analog RGB basically :-), then I'll see if I can do a scan doubler.

I made a mistake on TradeMe (NZ's ebay equivilant) and ending up winning two SGI O2 machines ... anyone want to buy one ?   - SGI O2 R5200 300MHZ (the upgradeable to an R7000 600Mhz if you have the skills), 384MB RAM, 36GB 15,000rpm disk and running IRIX 6.5.22 (.29 shortly).

What else, oh yes, got an A1200 with my 1084 monitor .. nice to play with later I think.

And finally and by no means least, I'm going to be a dad of two boys in a week or so .. HELP!!!!!!!!!
:-)

General chat / New toy :-)
January 30, 2008, 07:59 AM
Not really C128 related, but I might suss out a way to hook it up :-)

I have just got myself a little FPGA development board, only a bare bones one with a Cyclone-I on it but it does have VGA, RS232 and audio capabilities .. now to slowly learn VHDL.

I already now what project I want to attempt, just not sure I have the smarts yet! :-)

In the "Members" page it lists out all the members on the forum, and everyones e-mail addresses are exposed to the world in the pages HTML :-(

Any chance you could hide them ?  The e-mail address I use is dedicated to forums anyway but others might not like having theirs harvested by interweb trawl.

Herdware / Maximum cable lengths ?
January 14, 2008, 06:04 AM
Hi all,

Does anyone know the maximum length a floppy cable can be ?

I'm just planning out a home server to get a grip on the amount of data I have and I thought I might set it up on the server as well.

Plan is to have a low power PC sitting in a cupboard, and then run a few virtual guests (since I'm entitled to run all the flavours of VMware .. perk of the job :-) on it:

1 * Linux based NAS device
1 * DOS for 64HDD.

Only real snag I might have is for the distances of the Commodore serial bus for the drives .. how long can those cables go ?  And what can I then do to make the cables longer and still have them work ?  (thinking shielded cables and the like, or some sort of distance extender/repeater)

Any thoughts ?

Herdware / How do port expanders work ?
November 15, 2007, 01:08 PM
I'm a little hesitant to break mine open (pile of junk that it is mind), but what is the theory behind them ?  How do they work ?

Do devices on the expansions get put into slightly different memory localtions are do they all show up at once ?  What about power ?  they all powered at once ?  would the put a strain on the C128 ?

Mark
