"She who must be obeyed" has decreed that my old computers have to go :-(

Well I've scanned some of it so far, but I have a request .. does anyone have some good OCR software ?  And would that person be able to run the scans through it ?  Make sense to not have to  type in all the BASIC/ML routines :-)

Quote from: strandedinnz1)  What extra does Wheels get you ?
I don't understand.  Extra?

Quote from: strandedinnz2)  Can you get colours in 80 column mode with just GEOS128 ?
I haven't been able to do it.
Well isn't Wheels a Desktop replacement ?  What additional features or changes do you get over standard GEOS 2.0 ?

GEOS / Essential Apps for GEOS ?
August 29, 2006, 07:13 PM
Nah there is no GEOS driver for the MMC64, I might be able to write an application that can access the board and read off files from it, but a driver might be beyond me .. well take a year or three at least :-)

I think I'm going to have a stab at entering this ... been a while since I did anything that made me think :-)

Don't expect anything fancy mind :-)

Herdware / Put core on rom?
August 19, 2006, 06:24 PM
Hmm .. so there are some bad knock offs of the Willem programmers ?  Probably buy from them direct then.
I'm also keen on putting in the latest ROMs into my machines, then branching off and seeing what custom ROMs I can put together.  The 1571 and 1581 ROMs .. well I got impatient and bought some off of Ebay .. snag is they were all dead when I got them, so the seller is sending me some replacements, either the postman has a bad arse magnet around his neck or they are not good to start with  ... soon see, the seller seems to be a genuine sort and all so I don;t think it's going to be a big hassle :-)

You know if you like I can test your Willem progrmmer for you .... ;-)

Is this a metal job or the later plastic one ?
It's the plastic case one .. which is the ealier one and the metal case is the newer one .. I think :-)
It's got a handle built in and the keyboard clips in underneath the machine.

Hi there,

I managed to get hold a real interesting book the other day "Electronic Projects for your Commodore 64 and 128" by John Iovine.

Got some nifty things to make :

Speech synthesizer
A to D conversion
Digital Audio recording/playback
Motor control
Digital camera!
And loads of other stuff on how to hook stuff to the userport.

What would be the legality of doing a scan and OCR of it and posting it here ?

Would make some great projects for people to play with and expand on.

Herdware / Put core on rom?
August 18, 2006, 05:18 PM
Neat .. well do remember to keep us posted on how things go, I to would lie to know how to get stuff to execute from ROM.

Those Willem devices, they only cost about AU$120 don't they ?  Seen some on ebay and was wondering about getting one.

Oh yes, got a good book here electronics projects for the C64 C128... will post about it in a new thread :-)

Auctions et al / C128s and other stuff for sale
August 17, 2006, 08:23 PM
I've got to much stuff cluttering the place up, the Commodore kit I'm hesitant to sell (I'm obviously a hoarder! :-) but can be pursuaded.

Everything listed will be as clean as I can get it (I tend to strip down everything I have and clean it before rebuilding)

C128 flat (64K VDC) - number 8 key needs sticking back on (got spring and barell but inside of key needs repairing), minor colouring (6581 SID)
C128D (built in 1571)... only missing a prop up foot on the keyboard, minor colouring (6581 SID)
1541-II - bit rough looking, looks like it's been in the sun for 20 years :-)
1541 - excellent
C64C - Excellent condition (8580 SID)
GEOS on a ROM
2 * 8580 SIDs
1 * 6581 SID
2 * 8520 CIAs
2 * 6526 CIAs

Like I said not sure if I want to sell, but could be tempted *hint hint* ;-)

None Commodore stuff:

2 * Acorn RiscPC's each with the following :

233Mhz StrongARM
32Mb to 64Mb RAM (I forget)
2Mb VRAM
1.8Gb IDE harddisk
One of the machines has a CDROM drive
PC-Card with 5x86 133Mhz (with PC-Pro software, runs Windows 98 OK)
10Mb ethernet podule
RISCOS 3.7

Only one of the machines has a keyboard and mouse, takes standard PS/2 keyboards, mouse would need an adapter to make it fit .. just seems to be a re-arrangement of pins.

If you like something make an offer.

Oh and I'm in New Zealand.

GEOS / Essential Apps for GEOS ?
August 17, 2006, 08:12 PM
So what are the essential applications to have for GEOS 128 2.0 ?  Whats needed for a "useful" experience ?

So far I've got :

C128 with 64K VDC
1084s RGBI
1581 - well the kit, just need a drive mechanism :-)
1571
1541-II
512K REU
MMC64 - really like to use in GEOS
Commodore mouse

Actually I've a lot more 128 stuff but that's whats connected together.
I don't know whether to sell the rest or keep it ?

GEOS / GEOS!
August 17, 2006, 07:54 PM
Hi there,

Couple of questions :

1)  What extra does Wheels get you ?
2)  Can you get colours in 80 column mode with just GEOS128 ?
#390
Quick update in case anyone is interested :-)

I replaced the IEC filtered socket with just a plain IEC socket from Dick Smith, cost a whole $1.50 vs $35 for a filtered version.

Turns out the 1571 survived it's adventure unscathed :-)  Can't get the black scorch off of the inside mind.

Now I'll be putting in a replacement ROM and I'm hoping that'll be the end of problems for another 20 years.

Regards!

Herdware / Put core on rom?
August 16, 2006, 08:04 PM
Yup the 128's all have a ROM socket, you can put large ROMs in and select which bank you want with the flick of a switch.

I've GEOS installed in mine so when it's flicked to ON the C128 boots straight into GEOS and after asking for the system disks away it goes.

So yes to your questions, you can put a ROM in, and it will "boot" from it.

What sort of core/OS/application do you have in mind ?
#392
That's a superb looking answer, I shall give it a go over the weekend! :-)

Thanks

Mark
#393
That's very generous and I'm not about to turn you down ;-)

What would you like in return though ?  I'm sure I can find something to trade, managed to gather all sorts of odds and ends here.

Drop me a mail at strandedinnz at yahoo.com

Regards

Mark

It would appear I've blown the filters in the power socket of a 1571 drive, does anyone know what part I should get as a replacement ?
Any OZ or NZ suppliers ?

Thanks

I may have an empty case (sans drive mechanism) I can send you - let me hunt thru the garage this weekend.

cheers,

General chat / Introduction
August 07, 2006, 06:39 AM
Hmmm ... I'm tempted to dabble in the whole online Commodore bits shop, in the process of expanding my current company (it's just handling my contract job at the moment), my wife wants me to set up a "computer services" side of things as she wants to get experience in the whole running of it, buying/selling that sort of thing.
Postage shouldn;t be prohibative from NZ to OZ I suppose.

Hi there,

Does anyone know which jumper (if any) I need to short to enable the ROM socket of a 1750 REU ?

I can see :

J5 - ROMHL
J4 - ROML
J3 - ROMH

None are shorted at the moment, and any ROM I put in the socket ends up with the C128 starting with a black screen.

Thanks!
