Software / Re: Looking for good disc-copy software

Quote from: SmallCleverDinosaur on February 16, 2010, 10:17 PMBut then I need a program that is able to copy PRG,DEL,REL and SEQ files. Does anyone know of a good program to do that? None of the discs are copy protected.

As long as nothing is copy protected, the most reliable program I use to copy all file types is FCOPY on the CMD HD utilities disk.  It'll be pretty time consuming if you're talking about a lot of disks though.  You may be better off getting a setup that you can create D71 files with, like Diddl suggested.  Personally, I use an XE1541 cable and Star Commander on an old DOS box.  Works great for creating D64s, D71s, and D81s.

Yes, the offer is definitely still open.  In fact, the same offer is good for anyone else that may be in need of Commodore serial cables.  :)

cbmguy, if all you need is a standard Commodore serial cable for connecting your C= computer to an external disk drive or printer, I have plenty of spares.  Just let me know how many you need and give me an address to send them to.  You can send the cost of shipping to my PayPal account whenever it's convenient for you.

I checked ebay for the id Robert mentioned. Result was negative. Even no success with clickheresoftware. But there is an mauricerandall on ebay, who is inactive since 2007, but some comments sounds like he sold some commodre stuff in the past. Maybe...

It looks like that's the one.  I think I remember reading somewhere in the past that his PayPal account was closed.  I guess he could have opened a new PayPal account since then though...

Here we are in the last half of January 2010.  Has anyone heard anything more about these CMD auctions?  The cmdrkey store website that Orinoco linked to is empty now.  Does anyone know what Maurice's eBay user ID is?

Auctions et al / Re: Is a 1540 floppy worth $750?
January 17, 2010, 06:16 PM
Thanks for the link.  The fact that there's only one photo, and it's being sold as "untested, sold as is", probably cost the seller quite a bit of money.  With the 1540 that I sold, I had many photos, including internal shots that showed the original 1540 ROM chip, and screen shots from a VIC-20 that showed that it was in working condition.  I don't think the condition of the box mattered that much...  The fact that there was an original box as all is rather impressive.  The one I sold had the original box, and the original test/demo disk (which I have available for download on my website).  Anyway, as always with eBay, you win some, and you lose some.  It's the only form of gambling that I participate in.  ;)

Well, I watched the seller re-list it a few times, and the last auction it actually sold for around $70 USD, not really all that surprised at that price

Do you have a link to the auction page?  Or the eBay item number?  I'm just curious to see what kind of condition it was in.

Hmm.. I think I have a few Vic-1541s, what do they normally go for?

In good condition, they usually only sell for slightly more than a standard 1541.  In other words, around $10 or $20.

Quote from: Blacklord on January 14, 2010, 04:52 PMGeez - these turn up fairly regularly over here (although 1570's are much more common), last 1540 I sold on eBay about 7 months back went for $AU25.51 which is the highest I've ever got for one. I certainly would not pay more than that for one !

You're not confusing the VIC-1540 with the VIC-1541, are you?  If not, please let me know when you see a 1540 this cheap again.  By all accounts, not many 1540s were even made in the first place because, at the time, cassette drives were much more popular than disk drives.

Unless you have a VIC-20 and really, really want something that A. is slightly faster than the 1541 when used with a VIC and B. matches the color scheme, I'd say that's a "no."

From a standpoint of a useful item, it's probably not worth too much.  But 1540s in good condition are quite hard to find, and as Mr. Sutton has pointed out, most of the 1540s out there have had the ROM swapped out, so to find one in good condition with the original ROM is quite rare indeed.  So from a collector's standpoint, they can be worth quite a lot.  Just FYI, the buyer in my auction was Bo Zimmerman.  I think the fact that he was willing to pay as much as he did says something about the value of it.

Would you ship to New Zealand ?  (without the PSU, don't really need a 120V one here :-)

I assume you're talking about the 1581...  Yes, I'm always willing to ship anywhere in the world, as is stated in my auctions.  If you don't want the PSU, I can give you a discount on shipping, although I won't be able to calculate that until the close of the auction.

It actually SOLD! to a bidder with 0 feedback, and it looks like it was not even working! :o

While the auction price seemed excessive, like Airship said, it's quite a rarity, and there may actually be Apple fans out there that would be willing to pay that price.  What seems fishy to me is the shipping charge for that auction, $3100.90 for UPS Next Day Air, or $3021.50 for USPS Priority Mail.

I sold one on eBay a couple years ago in mint condition, with a 99¢ start price (as always), and it had a final sale price of $457.10.  I think that's a more accurate value.

Andrew says that the BBSes will be back up in February, after he's had a well-deserved vacation with family.

Or earlier!  ;)

As of today, 10 January 2010, both Cottonwood and Borderline BBSs are back up and running.  Thank you everyone for your support while I was away, and I hope you'll all continue to give your support by calling my boards.  :)

Call Borderline BBS at +1 (951)242-3593.

Old Tech...  Still alive and well in 2010!

1TB on a Commodore and for that price would be amazing!  ;)

1TB on a Commodore for any price would be amazing!  :)

But really, what would you do with that much space on a Commodore?  Even with the max 4.3GB allowed on a CMD HD, I have a hard time thinking of how to fill that much space.  ;)

$505.01 for a 20MB drive... And I recently saw a 1TB drive advertised for $109!  Amazing.  ;)

Heh, Andrew Wiskow seems to be doing most of his posting on Facebook.  :)  As of yesterday, his last Facebook posting was on October 9.

Yeah, I try to keep active on Facebook to keep my family and friends informed on what's going on in my life here, and to keep in touch with them as well.  I try to check up on this forum as often as I can, too, but I haven't had time to keep up with most of the other C= forums...  definately not enough time in the day!  ;)

Quote from: Blacklord on September 11, 2009, 07:04 AM1201's are as common as mud (at least here) - I threw out about a dozen of 'em a couple of years ago.

That's interesting...  Were they not very good quality monitors?  I know the CM-141's I've seen, while they "looked good", all had some kind of tube defect.

Although the price is nuts for *any* old monitor, in the seller's defense, I've never heard of a 1201 monitor, and it's not listed on Bo Zimmerman's website, so it would seem to actually be a rare monitor.  The monitor that Commodore marketed for the C16 and Plus/4 in North America was the CM-141, which doesn't look like this 1201.  On the other hand, perhaps this is like the 1570 disk drive, which is rare in North America, but fairly common on Europe and Australia?

AU$149.95 for a C128 System Guide, however, is just plain ludicrous.  ::)

Hey, for those who don't know (unless you are on Facebook), Andrew posted an Afghanistan mailing address where you can send him care packages.  Now all I have to do is figure out what to send...  :)

I don't want anyone to think I'm just being greedy...   Items from the care packages I've asked people to send will be distributed to everyone that I work with here.  I'm one of the senior guys, so I'm just trying to "take care of my people".  Everything is greatly appreciated.  If anyone here is interested in sending something, here's the address you can send it to:

Andrew Wiskow
AFN Bldg. 415
Bagram AF
APO AE 09354
U.S.A.

(of course, leave off the "U.S.A." if you're *in* the U.S.A.)  ;)
