Good to know.  Maybe I'll try one of the DB25 pass-through cables that work on the LtKernal.

Maybe the extension was too long, or it's a shielding issue?

Herdware / 128DCR Extension

Hey there,

I'd like to hook up an extension cable to my 128DCR.  Would a standard pass-though DB25 serial cable work?

Funny that you mention this, as I'm after the same thing for joysticks.  I actually started to build one based upon some simple AND gate IC's.  I had a single wire to work in a mock up and then had a daughter so I ran outta time! :)  IN short I was going to use the ICs attached to a 3 way toggle for a Joy 1/2 toggle.  The same concept I'm sure would work with the serial bus though it would be quite unwieldly using the AND IC's I was using.  Prob something that could be adapted using an arduino or something of the sort.  I wanted to stay away from mechanical rotary switches, though it probably wouldnt hurt with an ON-OFF-ON 3 way rocker.

Nice, how'd you wire it up internally?

so isn't the only difference with a 40 vs 41 is the serial timing.  Which makes them a little faster on the VIC?  If that's the case wouldn't putting a 1540 DOS and Kernel ROM in a 41 give you the same thing?

Herdware / Re: Keyrah and C128 keyboard...
December 30, 2009, 04:34 AM
Great idea, though using the work Keyrah is abit misleading.  Keyrah is a device to turn a 128/D/64 into a USB keyboard to be used on a modern PC, not the other way around which you describe.

That said, I'd LOVE to do it.  It be fantastic to have a modern keyboard on my 128D and 64....  then I could tuck them away under the desk and just use a normal keyboard....  Ahhh the possibilities...

Herdware / Re: How to use ETHERNET in 1541Ultimate?
October 20, 2009, 01:19 AM
WOW, lots of questions let me at least get this started....

Assuming you have a 1541U with Ethernet there are several resources at your disposal.  Firstly you'll need to get it physically plugged into your network.  It uses an RR-Net compatible adapter so if you google on that you should find loads.  In order to move files to it, you'll have to run the 128 in 64 mode (as I do) to utilize WarpCopy which rocks.  That's the easiest way to move D64 and D81 images (no D71 support).  Though I only use it for D81, as the 1541 emulates D64 perfectly so no need.  In short you run WARPCOPY.PRG on the commie, and WARPCOPY06.EXE on the PC to READ/WRITE images.

I suggest 1541ultimate.net forums for step by step help.

As far as Contiki all the info you need is at the end of this thread:

Good luck!

Guess I had missed the post about moving to new server/?
Thought the forum had just down due to finances, maintenance, or something.
I just found it here.
Glad it is still here.
Now to get caught up on 128 happenings :)

Welcome!  You wouldn't happen to have lived in Orlando, FL back in the day?  Just curious as "geezer" was an avid BBS user in our scene.  Not that he had the (C) on the moniker! ;-)

PM me what you're looking for, not including actual S&H of course and maybe we can work something out...  I'm definitely fond of this particular "breed".

You may want to consider a floppy / uIEC/SD2IEC card if you can't find one.  You'll just need the floppy for the REL user file (assuming that it's REL) and any other REL files....  My understanding is the SD-based cards only partially support REL.

Mouse, and also just desk space...  Very limited room and I like to keep things a minimal as possible and not have 100 cables everywhere.... :)

A little off topic but this reminds me of a problem I'm wanting to solve.  I'm seriously tired of constantly unplugging and replugging in my joystick between ports to make it work with various games.  I was going to wire up a simple 4 cable with a toggle switch but and worried about possibly blowing something up in the 1/4 sec that they may end up joined together...  I'm thinking a three way switch might do the trick as the middle pole could be left unwired but am unsure.  Anyone try something like this?

I have and he's given me some great pointers that I'm going to check out and if that doesn't work I'll ship it to him.  The problem is I first need to find a way to make it fail 100% of the time so he can test his work.

I've seen the 128D's go for anywhere from 50-275 bucks (less if the keyboard is missing).  I own two one I paid $125 for and the other $200.  If your 128D works I may be interested, PM me.
Heh, whenever we have an available one with keyboard, it goes for $30 (not including the postage that people think is too high).

Wow, well if you ever get another 128D let me know please, mine is flakey and would love to replace it....

128's go for $25 to $100, I just sold one to a guy from the forums for $25, but that was as a favor, I'd expect to get 50-75 for one.

Just got my hands on one of these, and all I can say is WOW!!!

I now have all the great ROM functionality (plus some great non-ROM apps) I always wanted without any limitations.....  ie, Servant always "buggin me" when I didn't need it!

I'm gonna pull the machine and check my socket maybe the solder didn't float all the way through to the top of the board.  Any other ideas?
Have you thought about sending the board to Ray Carlsen for repair?

That would be a negative, as I'm unfailiar with Ray?  How would I get in touch with him?

I just have to say that I am thrilled, that Andrew has been an AMAZING resource to me when I decided to reenter the commodore scene and setup AABBS, just because...  I've had the great fortune of having him dial in and post messages from afghanistan!  Now that's something I never had back in the old days! ;-)

Herdware / Flaky 128DCR
September 02, 2009, 06:29 AM
I have a 128D which I was using with a lt. Kernal.  Getting the LtK to work with the internal disk drive required cutting a pin on U3 and wiring to the daughter board.  That was all well and good, but I decided to removed the LtK from the setup and when trying to resolder that pin (with a trace wire) to the board the damn thing broke off at the IC plastic.

Long story short, dead computer.  So I pulled that chip, ordered a new 74LS08PC and put in a socket and all appeared well.  Welp I'm still getting flaky behavior on file access (only in 128 mode) and I assume it's because the u3 chip is involved in burst mode and memory banking (who knows what else).

I'm gonna pull the machine and check my socket maybe the solder didn't float all the way through to the top of the board.  Any other ideas?
