Title: Serial #'s
Post by: swordfish1030 on October 07, 2007, 12:38 PM
Using the serial number on a piece of hardware is there anyway to find out when it was made, what chips it has etc..?
I ran the short piece of code and I know my C128 has 64k video and the newer chips as well as the latest bios( if I may )

I know, I know.. ( I have a C64 that has the 8 pin video out, and I was wondering if I can find out more just using
ther serial #? ) I also have a few 1571's that I might like to run serials on if the information is available .

If I remember correctly the serial #'s will indicate what ROM's the units were shipped with (if there is a published list).

I think the best way to insure what you have is to Peek at a memory location which will tell you what version of ROM's are actually in the devices (computers AND Drives).

As I recall the 1571 and th 1681 came out with a few problems when they were first released and then corrected down the line. Also, keep in mind that back then many of us upgraded our ROM's with new C= ROM's, also some 3rd party ROM's  as well as User created ROM's that were made by people based on the published issues.

Sorry I can't be more definitive but that was a LONG time ago (for me) and was something that is not in the forefront of my brain.

Maybe this is something we could do? I'd be willing to submit a list of my hardware's SN's with features, ROM revisions, etc.

All we need is a standard: a list of what info to submit, and a common format for it.

I think this could be very useful.
