Title: What's the Best 80-Column Paint Program?
Post by: airship on October 18, 2007, 08:11 AM
Okay, so from those of you who have actually OWNED and USED such things, what is the best 80-column paint program for the C128 with 64K of VDC RAM?

You can still buy new copies of Spectrum 128 and Sketch Pad 128 from Centisoft or alee650 on eBay for a relatively reasonable price. But as near as I can tell IPaint - and its graphics conversion companion IPort - are not to be had at any price, unless you're lucky enough to spot one on eBay. It's not even available in a pirated version anywhere. (Okay, so I looked - but only because I can't BUY it!) I suspect IPaint is the one, just from the images I've seen that have been created with it.

So is one of these 'it'? Or is there something else that's better?

BTW, I've got the paint program that came with BASIC8. Not good enough by a long shot. But BASIC 8 is pretty cool for creating computer-generated 80-column graphics.

Here are all the graphics programs listed on the Canonical List of C128 Software. I'm assuming that some titles just aren't what I'm looking for simply from their names: Cadpak 128, Graph Master, Poster Maker 128, and most likely 3-D Canvas v1.7.

Graphics
------------------------------
3-D Canvas v1.7
CadPak 128
Colorez 128
Graph Master
Ipaint
Iport
Master Paint
MicroIllustrator 128
Poster Maker 128
Ruler 128
Sketchpad 128
Spectrum 128
Spray Paint 128
Star Painter

I-Paint may still be available direct from Rick Kane. Try contacting him via the phone number or e-mail address given on his website: http://rick.kane.home.att.net/

Just came across an IPaint + IPort + 64K Upgrade (http://cgi.ebay.com/IPaint-IPort-64K-VDC-upgrade-for-Commodore-128-C128_W0QQitemZ260170045489QQihZ016QQcategoryZ74945QQcmdZViewItem) auction on eBay. Just 10 hours left, and currently at $31.

Not to my knowledge.

Right, the first 3 are not paint programs, and 3-D Canvas is a C128 40-column paint program.

Hmm, not having Star Painter, I thought it was a C64 program.

Yeah, that's Hellion's auction. He's good people.

That's actually what sparked my interest. I've wanted a copy for a long time and saw this auction. It's the first and only time I've ever seen it for sale. But I've just been watching so far. It's $36 right now which is still a good price, especially considering it includes a 64K CLD adapter!

...just went and worked out the math. It ain't happening THIS payday! :(

I can't count the number of times I've thought, "Damn it, now why couldn't that auction have come up a few days later [/ next week / next month]!" When I do have the money, I can't find a good deal, and when I find a good deal, I don't have the money. :(

I've seen IPaint pop up a few times in the last year, so keep your eyes open and you'll probably see it again. And at least one other time I've also seen it paired with IPort, though probably not including a RAM upgrade like this one.

By the way, anyone happen to know if the IPaint file format is documented somewhere?

Star Painter is available as C64 version and as C128 version.
"StarPainter 128" is for C128 only. There also should have been a special version for the Graphic Booster but I've never seen a disk.

The winner's eBay handle is xand! He got it for $37 + $6 shpg. DEFINITELY a bargain considering he got the 64K expander & IPort along with the copy of IPaint. (I hate him.)

We should recruit new members by PMing anyone who bids on a C128 item on eBay. :)

Hehe... targeted advertising, eh?

Or maybe our members who sell merchandise could make sure to let their buyers know where to find the best (and perhaps only?) dedicated C128 forums on the Net. :)

I was outbid by $1... I was going to place a higher bid but had to consider the cost of international shipping.

Sheesh! Wiskow just had the OPPOSITE problem - he quit bidding on that Aussie auction for the 1570 due to shipping costs. You guys should switch houses. :)

Sorry for the gravedigging, but has anyone located a disk image of IPaint? I've tried contacting the author directly, but to no avail. I used to own a copy... I can only imagine where it is now. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Been there many times. On those rare occasions when I have a free pay day there won't be 1 item on Ebay I'll want

I think I actually joined a long time after buying IPaint/IPort and just noticed this thread. Thus the long time.
