Title: Buy the '64 & More' Store. Yes, buy the whole works on eBay!
Post by: airship on November 06, 2007, 03:35 AM
Paul is selling all of his inventory PLUS his website for the '64 & More' store. $2000 is the opening bid. Two storage units full of Commodore 8-bit and Amiga stuff. You pick it up. He's got a video tour of it all on eBay. It makes me wish I had an extra two grand and a truck: 140175767557 (http://cgi.ebay.com/MASSIVE-Commodore-Amiga-LOT-64-More-is-for-Sale_W0QQitemZ140175767557)

Interesting.  I've always wanted to visit him down that way but never got a chance.

After watching the video I think it's a collector's dream, but an investor's nightmare.  The really good stuff is pretty much gone, and unless you live close to the storage facility the moving costs (even across town) will be killer.  He claims he averaged $400 per week selling on eBay last year, but that's definitely not a sustainable activity given the fact that it's a finite amount of inventory and you can't easily replace the big sellers.

I bought a number of items from Paul in the past. Hopefully the new owner will continue selling on eBay.

I've bought some items from Paul in the past, too.  I've never had a problem with anything I got from him...

I thought he did a pretty good job with the video...  Except when he said he sold something to "Hungaria".  Hmmm...  I'll have to try to find that country on Google Earth!  ;)

Well, it didn't sell for $2000 minimum bid the first time, so he's relisted it for $5000 minimum bid!! I wonder if that strategy ever works? :)

Who knows, maybe it is a good strategy in this case. After all, he says "...last year, I LIVED doing this business. For someone who doesn't mind doing a little work and who is organized, the sky is the limit!" That sky-high potential might be a little easier to believe in with a minimum bid of $5000 than $2000.

The problems are that his inventory is fixed and shrinks over time so there is less and less potential to make money and worse yet, the good stuff has been picked over so next year's sales will be dramatically smaller than last year's. It is a flawed business model and anyone that buys it thinking they can turn that mess into a viable, on-going concern isn't someone that should be running their own business.

For $2000 and some sweat equity, I think you could have made a few bucks over time. For $5000, I think it's a real stretch.

Oh, I agree with both of you. I was just pointing out that the higher price can actually be a marketing strategy, albeit probably a bad one in this case. I've occasionally sold things through Craigslist that attracted no buyers at a reasonable price, but moved immediately when relisted for more money. Conversely, putting something up at a price that's a little too high, then going lower if nobody bites, can devalue the item and result in no sale even if the new price is a real bargain.

I doubt he will sell the store since the few people who would be inclined to operate such a business would also know that the inventory's been well picked over. If he'd put it up while Worldlam was on his legendary buying spree, there might have been some chance of unloading the whole shebang, but now he's probably stuck unless he's willing to sell for a song.

It's up for auction again...  This time he started the bidding at $50!

3 days left...

More realistic - he'll get true market value for it.

The last few weeks I've noticed Commodore items selling for far less than they were 3 to 6 months ago.
I suspect this store will sell for a bargain price.

Interestingly Amiga items are on a ramp up (at least on eBay Oz).

cheers,
