There's a story (http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/ptech/12/07/c64/index.html) on the CNN website about the venerable Commodore 64. I'm stunned that the RNN or the WSPM hasn't posted about this yet.

Hey! Andrew's in the slideshow!

So is Jim Brain, and I learned something interesting - he's just 20 miles up the road from me in Cedar Rapids!

FTA: "Still, the C64 had an uneven reputation... graphics weak in comparison to the Apple II and Atari 800, according to McCracken."

Huh? Granted, the Atari allowed more colorful displays, but still... the C64 weak in comparison? And to even include the Apple II in the same sentence...

The Atari had sprites. The Apple II sucked for graphics.

I've always found the Atari display generation interesting, though for sanity's sake I much prefer the relative ease of Commodore's approach for handling the background and sprites.

Comparing my Atari to my Commodore, what I enjoyed most about the Atari was the larger palette. I also kind of liked the idea of "missiles" being distinct from "players". Had Commodore offered 8 "missiles" in addition to the 8 general-purpose sprites, that would have been lovely.

Need to set my alarm so I'll remember to watch Monday's webcast from the C64 25th anniversary event.
