Title: Singing 1571!
Post by: Andrew Wiskow on January 25, 2008, 07:00 PM
I've wondered for a while now if the "1541 sing" program that I've had in my disk collection since the 80's would work on a 1571.  I answered that question today.  It works!  In fact, it played louder and clearer on my 1571 than it did on my 1541!  I recorded the tune and put it up on YouTube...
Enjoy.  :)

Thanks for the memories. :)

Say, did anyone ever expand on that idea and coordinate several drives playing together? Maybe it's time to forget SID and develop the full musical capabilities of Commodore storage devices. :D

Stick a microphone on the 1571 case and feed it into the SID chip sound input. Then sync up a SID track with the drive tune. You've got a four-piece combo, baby!  ;)

Thanks for posting this, Andrew. You made my day!

Hahahaha...  Although there are rumors that this program will damage your disk drive, I ran this program many times on my original 1541 back in the late 80's, and it never had any "ill effects".  I'm pretty sure that the "drive knock" that is so common on 1541's is much worse for the drive than whatever it is that this program does.  BTW, when you press RETURN to start this program, a message pops up that says "please, don't ask why!"  Well, I'm going to ask "why" now...  Does anyone know exactly how this program works?  Also, someone on Lemon64 mentioned that there was a program called "drive synthesizer" that would allow you to compose your own music for the 1541 drive.  Does anyone here have a copy of that program?  I'll be making a d64 of the disk that this "1541 sing" program is on later tonight...  I'll post a link here to the d64 when it's ready.  :)

Okay... I've made a D64 of the disk with the "1541 sing" program.  You can download it at http://cottonwood.servebbs.com/1541sing.d64 ...  Enjoy!  :)

I can't GUARANTEE that it won't...  All I'm saying is that it's never damaged any of my drives.  Of course, Commodore disk drives weren't DESIGNED to sing.  But then again, Commodore computers in general weren't DESIGNED to do a lot of the things we do with them today.  ;)

I've discovered that Google Video (http://video.google.com) is much better than YouTube, so I moved my "singing 1571" video there.  The video on my first post in this thread will probably not work for much longer.  You can now find that video here (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6155027562028323649).

Maybe I should dedicate one of my 11 1541s strictly to making music.

OR I could use the 'Drive Composer' program to create four-part harmony for FOUR different 1541s! Oh, the humanity! :)

Well, sir... IF you do that, be sure to record the event so you can share the experience with the rest of us!  ;)
