Title: Apple Drive Mechanism
Post by: airship on January 30, 2008, 05:35 AM
Does anyone know if the Apple 5.25" drive mechanism is compatible with the 1541? The local recycler (local pickup = $0 shipping cost) has Apple ][ A9M0107 drives (20 of them!) for $7.00/ea., and I'm thinking I might be able to resurrect a couple of my dead 1541s if it's a compatible mechanism.

Everything is compatible with enough work :-)
For 7 dollars it's not worth worrying about, just try it.

Well, with gas being the price it is, and with the recycling center being 30 miles away (=2 gals. gas x $3/gal.= $6/trip), I would have to make two trips to try one and see if it worked, then go back and buy a couple more if they did. But if I knew in advance whether or not it would work, I'd only have to make one trip. So any advice given to me on the subject is worth about $6 cash money in my pocket. :)

I'm told that the Blue Chip BCD-5.25 (1541 compatible) floppy drives used Apple Drive Mech's.
