Hi,
Only my second post, in a year and half, ....sorry...
Anyway, bought a huge lot off craigslist (boxed 128, 128d, 1571, 1581) and ton
of software. In the bottom of one box was a RAMlink. It was missing the power supply,
but I found the 1581 power supply works. I can make the ramlink function, but would
love to have a manual to realize its full potential.
Anybody have a scanned version? If not scanned, would you be willing to
xerox and mail me a copy? I will pay all expenses plus reasonable fee.
Thanks,
Brian
Sure, Brian. If no one can come up with an OCR'ed version of the RAMLink manual, I can photocopy mine and send it to you.

Thanks Wiskow, I'll grab it for future use! I do have the original that works though.
BTW, in the huge pile of disks that came with this, there are several BBS programs.
At least thats what the labels say. You are interested in bbs stuff, right? What
programs need to be archived yet? (I'll go through the disks and get the
names for you).
Thanks-
Brian
I have final releases of All American, ICE, and Ivory BBS's available for download on the Cottonwood BBS website (http://cottonwood.servebbs.com). Bo Zimmerman has many more BBS titles available for download on his BBS website (http://zimmers.net/bbs/). If you have anything that isn't available on either of our websites, I'd be very interested in getting a copy of it for archiving.
Well, right at first I see I have original disks for EBBS 128 v4.6. Two double sided
disks, but one side (docs and misc) does not load. I see Bo has v4.7.
I still have tons of disks to go through, many are not labeled or labeled poorly.
I'll keep you informed.

At the post office I weighed the package to send to Brian in order to determine postage. I realized that Brian's package would be the same, if I were to send it to Sweden. Thus, I also determined postage to Sweden. Without that chapter 7 and the cost of packing envelope, it would cost $10.30 US.

I don't think anyone would expect you to perform this feat overnight. But when you do finish scanning it, I'd be happy to host the PDF on my server along with other CMD manuals that I have available there.
Well, I imagine it will take sometime. But eventually...
When I'm done I'll mail it to you so that you can host it on your site :)
Here in Toronto you can walk in to any copy shop and they'll scan documents for a few cents per page and output them to whatever format you want and save the results on a CD. Sending a manual across the ocean to get it scanned is just stupid.
I shouldn't be surprised.
Scan them, OCR them and PDF them for a few cents per page? Wow... It seems labor is really cheap in Canada. OCR'ing is really timeconsuming work. Maybe we should send all Commodore literature to you so it can be preserved forever as high quality, fully searchable PDF's.

Now that sounds like an idea...actually, I'm planning to do that very thing in a few weeks hopefully when I get that Electronics Projects book from the library...I got the time so I could easily push out 10 pages an hour scanned and possibly 2 hours using OCR software. ;)
C'mon man we're one big happy family here :)
Teamwork.
The process is completely automated. The caveat being that the paper must be in individual sheets for their feeder but the manual I had with my RAMLink (which I sold and no longer have, sorry) was in a binder and all the sheets could be removed, scanned and replaced without damaging the original. They don't do OCR though. They give you PDFs or jpegs or whatever you want and you can do OCR later if you're so inclined.

Thank you so very much, Robert. That is an extremely generous offer, and I will find a way to one day recipricate the generosity. Please take your time. I have a publication deadline in two weeks and talk to write for a conference which happens in mid October. Quite honestly I won't have time to begin my project until the winter holiday, and probably won't start developing the software in earnest until May - when all the smiling students disappear until August and the university pays me to sit at home and write C=128 software.
I do have a couple of general questions about the RAMlink. Is it true that I can use a 1581/1541 II PSU and not have problems? Does the speed of the 30 pin SIMM matter significantly? I saw two posts which had somewhat conflicting information regarding the memory speed.
Thanks.

QuoteIs it true that I can use a 1581/1541 II PSU and not have problems?
A RAMLink v1 does have a power pin-out that matches a 1581/1541-II power supply. However, the RL needs 1 amp of power minimum, and the 1581/1541-II p.s. puts out at most 800 milliamps. You can try a 1581/1541-II p.s., but the reliability is not assured.

No, it does not.

Thank you very much for the ramlink pdf. I got my Ramlink (finally) today - what timing. Unfortunately, my excitement turned to dismay when I put in my C128D and nothing happened. When I load a directory on device 16, I get "device not present". (Though the reset button does reset my system). Haven't had time to play with it, but I sure hope it works. I opened it up, and it has 4 30 pin SIMMS insalled, but I'm not sure of their size. At least I have a weekend project that I have been looking foraward to for years - and a manual!! Thanks again.
Update: Read the manual. Got the thing to work just fine. This is too exciting.
Cool Man! Congrads on finally getting a RamLink and even moreso on getting it to work! I am glad the manual came in handy for you.
It really is a great piece of gear... wait till you get a CMD Hard drive and connect it via the parallel cable... it is amazing to see 200 block programs load at 50k a second... its incredible.. And truly a remarkable piece of gear for the Commodore.
Also, Ctrl-D switches drives with Jiffy Dos, which is built in to the RamLink... and then F1 gets you a directory. It really is a great addition to any Commodore. The F1 dir listing is not destructable to programs in memory like loading a directory the standard way with "$". The RamLink really is a great piece of gear.. I love mine and am actually looking for a second one now. 4 x 4 meg ram chips is a nice addition also. You can get them pretty cheap...
Good luck!
I managed to get 2 4x8 mb SIMMS to work in the unit (brand new) along with my 1750. I actually purchased 4 new SIMMS but two of them don't work. They only show some absurd amount of space like 3770 blocks or so. While 16.5 megs will be nice - I have to say - even 8.5 mb changes my good old 128D into a whole new experience. I have become quite proficient with JiffyDOS - makes it an even better experience. I do have a couple of questions:
1) Has anyone used an "after market" lead-acid type battery supplying 6 V at 6.5 amps? i.e., not a CMD original. Any ideas?
2) I have the CMD ramlink utils and Andreas Bohms' RL-manager v3.8
http://www.andiboehm.de/english/index.html (http://www.andiboehm.de/english/index.html)
Are there any other utilities/useful pieces of software that you guys use?
3) anyone seen a copy of ckit 94 floating around out there? I read in an old commodore world mag that it is used for backing up CMD style drives. Any good backup utilities out there?
Thanks.

Yes, I have replaced the original batteries on both my RL's with aftermarket ones. Just make sure you get ones with the correct voltage and the same/greater amperage. I paid about $15 for each aftermarket battery (found at a local battery distributor).
QuoteAre there any other utilities/useful pieces of software that you guys use?
I use FCopy, FCopy+, or WCopy for my RL needs. And WCopy speeds up file-copying on JiffyDOSsed machines.

Hmm, I may have ckit 94 in the mountain of disks I have. However, perhaps ACUG's Dave "LordRonin" Mohr is better organized than I and can more easily dig it out.

Robert - your expertise and experience is very much appreciated. Thank you. I have a couple more questions.
1) I am currently using a v1 RL and I'm using a 1581 PSU. I know you mentioned due to the current differences (I believe 800 mA vs. 1A) these PSU's aresn't necessarily reliable - but I have several "brand new" (unused) 1581 PSU's and this puts them to good use. What power supply are you using (if you are using a v1 RL) that matches the 1581/1541 II style pin-out?
sidenote: Been running the 1581 PSU on my RL continuously for several months. I haven't had any reliability issues yet. Fingers crossed.
2) I am looking at picking up an additional RL for my 2nd system. But the RL I am looking at is a v2 RL (it has the other power connector). Can I pick up any power supply (at my local electronics store) matching the necesary power spec's and use it?
3) The RL utilities I got a hold of are the "stock" RL utils (contains FCOPY, MCOPY, etc.). What software "bundle" contains FCOPY+, BCOPY, WCOPY, etc. i.e., is there a name of the disk that cmd produced that contains these "upgraded" utils? Did they come with the HD util disks?
Thanks, again.
Tom

I use the power supply that originally came with the RL v1. :) By the way, if your 1581/1541-II p.s. puts out 5 volts @ 1 amp, that would be good enough for the RL v1. Some 1581/1541-II p.s.'s (the smaller ones) only put out 5 volts @ 800 mA.
QuoteBut the RL I am looking at is a v2 RL (it has the other power connector). Can I pick up any power supply (at my local electronics store) matching the necesary power spec's and use it?
Yes, with the RL v2 (which takes a coaxial plug), I have successfully used p.s.'s from Radio Shack (expensive!) that provide at least 5 volts @ 1 amp. The one good thing about Radio Shack p.s.'s is that they run cooler than the stock RL p.s..

Has anyone experienced the RamLink being "finicky" about it's SIMMS? Here is why I ask:
I purchased 4 (brand new, recently manufactured) 80 ns 30 pin 4x8 SIMMS. Two work perfectly (totaling 32000+ blocks), two only show as something like 3776 blocks (<1 meg). The two that work are cosmetically different from the two that don't. (This probably means nothing but the SIMMS that work have the 8 chips "left justified" on the SIMM. The two that don't work correctly have the chips "center justified" on the SIMM.) Any ideas? I would like to pick up two more that work. Can anyone direct me to a SIMM that is known to function properly with ramlink?
Robert - thanks for pointing out that the "larger" 1581 PSU's supply 5V at 1A. I immediately got a couple of the appropraite PSU's after your post.

Hmm, interesting. Could it be that the SIMMs are too fast? IIRC, the SIMMs I have in my RLs are slow (120 ns, I think), and the RL might not accept that speed (at least not when 4 of them are together). I'm only theorizing this, because last year, technician Ray Carlsen was dealing with replacement EPROMs for PLAs and found that too fast of a chip was incompatible with the C64/SX-64.
QuoteRobert - thanks for pointing out that the "larger" 1581 PSU's supply 5V at 1A. I immediately got a couple of the appropraite PSU's after your post.

seems i remember that the simm`s have to be a type called "fast page" and that the type "edo" wasnt really compatible for memory, seems i remember reading this somewhere.
