Title: 1571 Problem
Post by: aussierob on April 30, 2009, 02:41 PM

I pulled my commodore Hardware out of storage and decided to connect it all up again.

I have:

128 Computer
1901 Monitor
1571 Disk drive
1541 Disk drive
1581 Disk drive
1531 Mouse
etc etc

My problem is Non of my Disks will not work in my 1571 Disk drive. After typing the load command etc the screen says searching for "Program name" and the disk drive makes a lot of noise then the screen says  ?File not Found error The same program loads from my 1541 drive so no problem with disks etc.

I think the drive maybe out of alignment but do not know how to realign it. Commodore service and spare parts are very hard to get here in Australia, so any help or advise including instructions so I can attempt it myself will be helpful.

First, have you tried cleaning the heads of the 1571?

In addition to cleaning the heads, does the drive lever have some tension to it, or does it turn very loosely?  If it's loose, then it's likely that the lever has come disengaged and is not lowering the mechanism into place.  The twist down latch has a pin that eventually works loose and can fall out.  This is a common problem with most 1571s, and it's easily fixed.  For tips on fixing this, and other, common 1571 issues, check out Ray Carlsen's page on 1571s at http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cbm/1571diag.txt ...
