The SFD-1001 auction post and my response made me think of this topic.
How do you folks transfer software between your PET and your other machines, especially your computer that you usually use for Internet access (assuming it's not your PET)?
Here's my solution:
I use my regular (old fashioned) C-64 method, which means booting my WindowsME machine up with a floppy boot disk into Star Commander, which I then use to transfer files via a XE1541 cable to a 1541 disk. I am then able to take that disk and read it on my PET using a 2031LP drive.
Now, I've read (and experienced) that the 1541 and 2031LP format aren't identical. There's something slightly different between the two (timing?), and occasionally the drive will be a little hesitant to read the disk. But generally it works fine for me.
I think I've had more success if I format the disk on one drive over the other, but it's been a few months and I already can't remember for sure which one works better. So if you're experimenting, try formatting a disk on the 2031LP and another on the 1541, and see what works better. Next time I'm transferring, I'll do this and post my results.

It just occurred to me that in the time since I first started using the 2031LP to transfer files, I've aquired *two* MSD SD-2 drives. I should just be using those instead!

You know, I've never downloaded PET software from the Internet and used it on an actual PET. I always use VICE for that sort of thing. The only software I have ever used on my PETs was already of floppy from back in the day.

I typically try stuff out in VICE and if it's a keeper, then transfer it.
But lately most of my transferring has been the couple games I'm working on. I assemble with DASM on my laptop, do quick tests in VICE and then periodically transfer it to the PET for proper play-testing.

If it is a 4040 disk I use Star Commander to get the d64
If it is an 8050 or 8250/SFD 1001 disk I use my SFD1001 connected to the PET with either C2N232 or (I havent used yet, but want to try) SIPOD connected PET to Star Commander http://members.tripod.com/~petlibrary/SPDCBL.HTM (http://members.tripod.com/~petlibrary/SPDCBL.HTM)
If it is a tape I use the tape2disk program for the 64 to dump all the programs to tape (as long as the program does not load into too low of memory, it works fine)

I download with the C128DCR, do any .D64 conversion with the C128DCR, and then take the disk to the PET.
Not forgetting tape,
