I was going to do that on my forum, than the idea crossed my mind, that maybe some people register, not because they want to post a message, but because they want to be able to see what messages are new next time they visit.

So when I get around to deleting the dead flesh, I think I'll do a check for post counts and last time they logged on, because obviously most of them are probably failed spam attempts, but some might be my suggestion above.

There's another reason (beyond sign-up to spam) - you can't download or see attachments without registering.

Majority are foruim spammers not trapped by the spam catcher - they sign up and never come back (their sigs are the give-away in many cases)

At another C= forum to which I belong, the lurkers are coming in about 3 to 7 a day.  If they have multiple accounts (as disclosed by their IP address), they are automatically banned.  As long as they don't cause any trouble (like spam), they can sit where they are.  However, deleting them would remove any records of them being there in the first place, and then they would come back.

          Banning is more effective, IMHO,

But creates a false view of how many users there are.

If they really want in, they can post next time they join. They just take up more and more space in the database, and with SMF in particular they clog up certain tablesthat eventually slows things down for active users.

Just about all of them are spammers as identified at www.stopforumspam.com so there is absolutely no need at all for having them still floating around.

In fact that little mod is terribly useful - from it's stats : 9978 Spammers blocked up until today

Time and spacec wasters and oxygen thieves to boot!

They haven't slowed down the particular forum to which I refer... not yet, at least.  But thanks for letting me the eventual consequences.

Ooo, thanks for the link to the mod.  I will let the owner of that other forum know, and then he can make the decision whether to use it or not.

Send them to the USA.  We'll get them on the welfare rolls.
