Toni has given me details on the firmware update. He wrote --
The 3 major fixes/improvements made with the new firmware are:
1. Better response when using a normal (non-guitar) controller.
2. Better handling of the analog stick when in analog mode on a normal controller.
3. Some boards didn't allow all the back buttons (L1,L2,R1,R2) to be used as macros with a normal controller. This fixed that.
There were no changes made for when the psx64 is in guitar mode...

Just received mine a couple of weeks back, and picked up guitar and pad controllers at Goodwill. I can't wait to rock out during our first snowstorm!
