Title: SMF 2.0 RC5 to be installed
Post by: Blacklord on February 16, 2011, 05:42 PM
After this weekend I'll be installing the new version of SMF. Normally I don't give notice of upgrades, but this time I am because support for IE 6 has been deprecated.

3.74% of our traffic in the last month has come from people still using this antiquated and non-standard browser, so nows the time to ditch it and get something better. I suggest Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) or Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome).

The upgrade will mean that all mods will be backed out and new versions or replacements installed, as a result the forum will be "bare bones" for a day or two.

The upgrade will occur on Monday evening at 7pm (Australian Eastern Summer Time). For about an hour the site will return a 404 error if you try to reach the forums.

The latest version of Internet Exploder is "antiquated and non-standard."  :)

I agree - but there are people using it.

Fortunately 46% of visitors here are using Firefox, 26% are using IE8. Of those the breakdown is:

9.0 - 1.10%
8.0 - 86.50%
7.0 - 8.63%
6.0 - 3.69%
5.0 - 0.08%

That last one shows there's someone out there still using a very archaic version and they're a regular too - they show up every month.....

I don't recall a web browser for 3.1.  Back then, Microsoft was still poking around UNIX shops trying learn how to create a real operating system.  I think Gates was also trying to find out what this Internet thingie was all about.   8)

You can get IE 5.01 for Win 3.1 from here if you are so inclined :) (http://www.oldapps.com/internet_explorer.php?old_internet_explorer=3)

In preparation for tonight's upgrade I've started to back out the existings mods - things will therefore look a little 'bare bones' for a day or two.

Ok - new version is installed and operating in bare bones mode.

Changes:

New mod - Multiple Signatures - you can now have more than one signature - you'll find this option in your profile. If your current sig looks a little odd you will need to go in and reset it.
New mod - Animated Links -  Works only in Opera, Firefox, Chrome & Safari. Will not display in IE (any version) as IE is not CSS 3.0 compliant (although it claims it is).
Increased forum registration hardening - new users must match an image, answer a question and enter a CAPTCHA phrase as well as pass the Stop Forum Spam database scan.
New mod - BBCode with style - see http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=2505;id=169754;image (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=2505;id=169754;image) for a picture of how it works.
New mod - Country Flags - well an old one actually as this has been broken in the last few releases. Change this setting in your profile by choosing your country.
Menubar options are now centred rather than left justified.
Updated mod - Download System
New mod - Enhanced Dropdowns - in the message entry form font size and font type have been enhanced.
New mod - Multi Quote - this one lets you quote multiple messages from a board into your reply
New mod - Quick Translation - translate any post to another language - the little two circular arrows on the right side of the first line of the post is the translate button.
Updated mod - SMF Links - this is a returned one, has been broken in the last couple of releases.

.... and of course a whole heap of other cosmetic ones that you can discover for yourself.

Maybe you should require a urine sample as well to see if the new registrant is on something.   ;D

Wow, go to work on firmware and you miss all kinds of things!  So,

A.  Happy Birthaday Robert!
B.  Thanks for the link, Lance.  I only had IE3 for Win3.11 until now... can't wait to try IE5.01... Seriously! ...it took a while to get Win3.11 actually running on my new PC, so this sounds like a good test!
C. The new forum software seems to be running fine for me and I'm still using IE... let me check... v8.0.6... funny thing is sometimes I get a pop-up that says "High server load detected."  Umm... I'm guessing this is some sort of excuse for slow loading?  But pages seem to load the same speed weather or not the message is present...
D. Really sad you have to implement such strict measures for new members, Lance.  But if you do like BDD says, then be sure to automatically accept everyone who tests positive!

Ha ha - with the average increasing age of C= users I reckon it'd only show a larger range of prescription drugs

At least I guess it's relatively immune from the attacks more modern browsers get.....

Some of the new mods will not work at all with IE - the translate one for example won't show. The high server load is there for me to track and log, it'll be turned off eventually - just gathering stats to see what may casuse any issues.

The nice thing about it is that there's been zero spam registrations in the last two days. Won't say the problem is licked but better than the 10 or so that were coming through every day.

In my case, the drug-o-meter would go off the end of the scale, what with the exotic...er...stuff that gets injected into me each week.

It's a monitoring add-on I'm using while I fine tune things. Logs a lot of info for me.
