Title: Exchange character and editor ROM - possible?
Post by: MIRKOSOFT on March 06, 2011, 10:46 PM
Hi!

I have Q:

Is possible to exchange German character ROM and Editor ROM to US?

Are they socketed?

Many thanks for every help.

Yes, this is possible.

The character rom is seperate, but on the old C128 single and the C128D (not cost reduced) you need an adapter for the ROM. Because it has another pinout. (2364 pinout)

The editor is in the kernal rom. Just exchange the kernal rom.

Thank you!

No problem...

I mean flat C128...

I have one German and one US...
- German is PAL/220V PSU machine with JiffyDOS
- US is NTSC/110V PSU machine with voltage transformer

so the exchange only to German:
- Character ROM
- keyboard

correct?

Many thanks

For an good char rom replacement you need for US to DE. You need an 8KB ROM subtitute. 0000-0fff 4Kb std cbm charrset. 1000-1fff 4Kb German charset.
Attention: The layout of U24 in a C128 single is an 2364, so you need an pinout adapter, as mentioned before.

The kernal should reside in U35, just exchange it with a fitting kernal.
In case you want Jjiffydos with an German editor. It should be possible, but you have to do it yourself. I haven't found any information how exactly this could be done. The German editor has some cross jumps accross the 4kb range C000-Cfff i don't exactly understand.

It is not neccessary to replace keyboard. This is only a cosmetic change, for the key lables.

Hi!

You didn't understand:

I want to change German version of flat C128 to US version of flat C128, not vice versa!

Why doing it so problematic?

I have German PAL machine and US NTSC machine, so, if I connect NTSC to PAL C1084S-D1 and PAL C1084-P image will be not correct...

So, I have US JiffyDOS - there's solved replacement German Editor and I need only CharROM change from German to US and I don't want German labels, so I replace German keyboard to US keyboard from NTSC machine...
