I was aware that Commodore had re-launched, however I simply assumed it was another bunch of dreamers that had picked up and developed yet another hardware/software emulator. I didn't know that Leonard Tramiel (son of Commodore's founder Jack Tramiel) was on board as were some of Commodore's original team.
I shall watch with interest.
Yes, over 12,000 Commodore 64 Ultimates have been pre-ordered, according to https://slapsoft.com/c64_sales.html
And the list of those associated with the new Commodore are at

I wonder to what extent this respun C-64 will look, smell, sound and feel like the original. I guess it will depend a lot on what is being used for silicon. Is this an FPGA recreation or something built with discrete devices?
Leonard Tramiel's letter doesn't indicate if he invested in this project, but he did sound enthusiastic.

It basically uses the same motherboard as the Ultimate 64 Elite-II board except upgraded. It is FPGA. See https://ultimate64.com/
