Title: New Zealand User Group ?
Post by: Mark Smith on January 29, 2007, 07:06 PM
There enough people interested and nerdy enough for a New Zealand Commodore Users Group ?  :-)

Or is there one already ?

I'm thinking along the lines of something for repairs and buying selling rather than sit in a hall and nerd out ;-)

Regards

Mark

Many sheep in Kiwiland use computers ? :förvånad:

Actually, in all seriousness were there any home grown NZ computers ? Like Oz had the various Dick Smith VZ's & the MicroBee ?

I'm gonna have to see how things are in Canada for Commodore.  Perhaps a group there would be great too. I remember not too long ago you could walk into a store called Joe Cash and get anything from a commodore 64 to an Amiga 4000 and 1200 and everything in between including peripherals (yes even cassette units), printers, virgin disks for all commodore devices 5 1/4  3 1/2. and the likes.  monitors as well of course, modems, joysticks you name it.   So I would say that until not that long ago, commodore was still pretty strong up there.

I'll le you all know of my findings :-).

I'd also like to get something going here in Oz - I think the last active user group was in Melbourne, but their web page has not been updated in years. At one stage there was a very large group in Hornsby (Sydney), but it too seems to have died.

There are still Commie users here and I was in contact with about half a dozen in Tasmania (up until I moved about three years ago) that still only used their C64's as their computer of choice. There was also an elderly gentleman in Gosford that I provided a C64 to in '96 - it was his first computer & he used it until he died in 2005. For him, the 40 column screen was a bonus with his poor eyesight.

Just a case of finding people I guess.

cheers,

Lance

Things are good. (?) Canada has always been a hotbed of Commodore activity.

You'll have to be more specific about where in Canada because our country is fairly large. There are many Commodore user groups in Canada including one of the oldest and at one time, the largest user group in the world, the Toronto PET User's Group (http://www.tpug.ca) (TPUG). Name aside, it caters to all Commodore users and is still quite active. In fact, we're having out next meeting this Thursday. We usually get 15-25 people out for most meetings, even when it's -20 and snowing. That's dedication. The fact is, it's a lot of fun

Where was (is) this "Joe Cash" store? I've never heard of it. Sounds like a pawn shop.
