Is it necessary to unsolder the keyboard switches? I have NO soldering skills whatsoever.

Herdware / Broken Keys on C=128 Keyboard
January 24, 2011, 11:59 AM
I was using my C=128 today and now alot of keys have stop working. The L,G,A and other keys no longer work. The A key did work before but I had to press it serval times for it to respond. Is there a way to fix it without opening my C=128? Can I just pop the keys off like a regular keyboard and clean them? I have read that dirt and debris could be the problem. Please help I don't want to get rid of this computer!

There's maybe a piece of plastic or a loose screw as obstacle in the way of the head-move-mechanism. You can move the head-assembly carefully, when the drive is powered off by using the step-motor wheel as you would tune-in a radio station, without a disk in the drive, but the drive door closed.
A Tip for testing: use a formatted but non-important disk instead of your original program disk.

It worked!! Thank you LokalHorst! I don't get it tho. It move freely. It didn't get stuck when I moved it. But it works now! GEOS boots and my Challenger Pack diskette works. (The diskette that didn't work) But it still seems to have trouble moving all the way forward. I wonder why.

Its gotten worse since I wrote this. Now GEOS won't boot. It worked fine earlier today. I get the error in the screenshot below. Also a diskette that worked fine before doesn't anymore. I typed LOAD"*",8,1 just like it said on the diskette and it says ?FILE NOT FOUND ERROR. Could I have damaged it when I was bring it up from the basement? I moved it with a diskette inside. I didn't drop it or anything and I worked fine last nite.

Herdware / Is my 1571 disk drive broken?

I have a Commodore 1571 disk drive for my C=128. When I load disks into it and load programs sometimes the green drive light just flashes rapidly. Noting else happens. What does this mean? Is it broken?

Get an LCD TV that has S-video inputs. Build or buy an S-video cable for 40 column modes. If you need 80 column mode also, see these threads.

S-video is the way to go on LCD TVs, not VGA. Trust me, I have been down both paths.

I've never used 80-column mode. I not even sure what it is or what its used for. Do you know where I can buy an S-video cable for 40 column modes? Google was no help.

Herdware / C=128 VGA

I took my C=128 out of the basement. My Commodore Video Monitor 1902A is so big, bulky and heavy. I want to use a flat screen VGA monitor. How do I hook up this monitor to my Commodore 128? Thanks in advance.
