So nobody installed their uiec in the 128D?

BloodyCactus, please practice on something other than a 128DCR if you never used a soldering iron before :) It really makes a difference.

Once you are ready, all you have to do is cut the trace between each of the two pads, then soldier wires between the pads and switches, so that a switch will either open/close each pad. The pad closest to the front is 8/9, the other one 10/11.

Herdware / uIEC or SD2IEC installation in 128DCR
November 11, 2010, 10:31 AM
Ok, I'm going to generalize the topic from the previous subject. I would like to mount either my uIEC/IDE+CF or SD2IEC inside my 128DCR, and was wondering a couple of things:

1. From people that did it, where did you put it? Do you have pictures?
2. Where do I connect it? I'm no electronic wiz, but I have have soldiering experience. I just need to know where to connect what :)

Any help, pointers, links, etc. would be helpful. Thanks!

I just did the drive switch on my 128DCR (although I just did one - 8-9 toggle).  The two pads you see on the motherboard are basically two jumpers. They are closed  at the factory, so all you have to do is cut them open, then wire a simple switch to open/close the jumper. Do one for each pad. The one closest to the front is for 8-9 toggle. So, 4 wires, 2 switches.

Ray Carlsen has a good write up on it, amongst other things, on his website: http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cbm/drv8to9.txt

Here's the important part:
QuoteC128DCR INTERNAL DRIVE:
The internal 1571 in the metal case USA version C128DCR has no
external switches for drive select. It is factory set for device #8.
There are drive select "jumpers" inside the computer however, on the
motherboard near the drive. They are the two tiny silver half-circles
with a bar between them. Cutting the bar opens the jumper. If you look at
the PC board just under the left side of the drive, you will see them. It
is not necessary to remove the drive unless you plan to solder in there.
The jumpers are located near ICs U106 (a 6522), U114 and U112. DS (drive
select) jumper #1 is nearest to U112, towards the front of the computer.
Electrically, the jumpers connect two pins of IC U106 VIA chip
(65C22 or 6522 in some models) to chassis ground. Jumper 1 grounds pin 15
and jumper 2 grounds pin 16. That information is helpful just in case the
foil pad(s) jumpers on the PC board are accidently damaged when you are
installing a drive select switch. If the pads lift off the board, you can
still make connections directly to the IC pins for your switch.

Hope this helps.

If you figure out the wiring for the uIEC, please post it here, that's my next step, and I can't find the pinnout either :)

Assembly / Re: Commodore 128 Dev Kit docs / manual

I guess that's a no :) Since it follows standard MOS syntax I can get by, but it would be nice to have some more detail. Anyway, I guess it's time to actually start programming, not dreaming about an ideal setup...

Assembly / Commodore 128 Dev Kit docs / manual
November 01, 2010, 06:33 AM
Now that I got the Merlin 128 manual, there's one more to be had.... The dev kit manual for the HCD65 assembler... I've been trying to set up an ideal development environment on my 128, and I think Zed and HCD65 fit the bill, but would love to get more info on it.

I would use Buddy, but don't really like the idea of having to write a small BASIC program to compile SEQ files, and the EBUD editor is painful at best. With Merlin an outside editor is not even an option really, and again, the built-in editor is just plain weird...

Any help on the dev kit instructions would be greatly appreciated!

Does anybody have a copy of the Merlin 128 manual in any format? I've been trying to find one for a while now and have failed...

Thanks!
