A question that has been bothering me, if I find some old software deep in my C128 stash, is it OK to distribute it on the internet?
Define "OK". It isn't legal in the strictest sense but generally falls into the category of victimless-crime/nobody cares. I say go for it and if someone objects, stop. Simple.

QuoteOn the other hand, there is a guy on ebay-UK (alee650 - you may have heard of him) who sells this software over and over and I don't think he has had these in stock for 25 years, they are most likely duplicates.
He (Tim aka alee650) is well known for selling duplicates (fakes, copies, clones, whatever you want to call them) and doesn't go to great lengths to inform that what he is selling isn't original (that goes for software and hardware). If you're a user, his stuff is fine. If you're a collector, it's worthless.

You can download a ROM image from a Warp Speed v1 here and from a Warp Speed v2 here. It is not presently emulated by VICE but it will be supported in an upcoming version. Here is a picture of a (somewhat beaten up) Warp Speed cartridge:

Yes, it supports multi-part games and yes, it will work with a 128D with JiffyDOS.

Hey guys, what does this mean? What happened in the past?
Andrew may not want to go back there so I'll tell you what happened. When Maurice Randall started taking people's money and not sending them the items they had paid for (quite a different matter than being incommunicado) a group effort was made to collect JiffyDOS ROM images and I made them available to the public. Andrew downloaded the archive, slapped it up on his webpage and started inviting people to download his JiffyDOS collection. This left a bad taste in more than a few people's mouths and that's why now, when new images are located, they're quietly distributed to trusted members of the community. His implying that by not distributing the new images I'm the bad guy who doesn't want to help the community is offensive.

I wish I could say it was an isolated incident but he makes a habit of expropriating the work of others, taking credit for that work and then tirelessly promoting himself as the community-minded guy who made the effort. I've talked to Andrew about the incidents but (evidently) they still irk me.

I don't think the problem is finding someone with the ability & know-how so much as finding someone with the time and inclination. :(

well, I'm interested in buy the sd model for $50, how to buy/pay it?How mainy time is required to have it?
Did you read the Usenet posting I linked to? Contact brain@jbrain.com and he'll answer your questions. Time is a variable dependent upon his stock (I understand he has them on hand) and shipping time to your country. As for the SD2IEC, I wouldn't bother as it is inferior to the uIEC in every way.

Trying the OC-118 ROM in the 1541 is a good idea. Just for curiosity's sake you should dump them both and do a diff. Something ain't right here.

mmmm, but what's about fastloader troubles?
The uIEC works with JiffyDOS and Super Snapshot and a few other fastloaders and Jim is working on adding compatibility with others so it shouldn't be a problem. As for price, the tiny SD model is $50 USD and the larger model that uses CF cards and supports IDE devices is $75 USD.

Seen on the web that sd2iec is the best after 1541 ultimate, do you know other alternatives?
I think the Micro IEC is the best non-1541 compatible mass storage device and the uIEC/SD is small enough that it can be mounted inside various C= computers. There's a wee bit more information in this Usenet posting. I can ask Jim where inquiries about purchasing should be directed if you're interested.

So far, the only non-CBM drive that I have in the JiffyDOS collection is the Indus GT.
I have others but after the expropriation of the ROMs I previously made available, it was decided that it was best not to distribute them.

my firm is CBM DOS 2.6, seems the same as commodore 1541 drives... why the 1541 jiffydos doesn't works?
It is almost a 100% copy of the 1541's ROM which is why the manufacturers of that drive were sued by Commodore. I can confirm that JiffyDOS v5.0 for 1541 will work in that drive. Perhaps you should try burning another EPROM and then test it in a real 1541 to confirm that it works and then test it in the 118N.

Is there any particular reason you're looking for that specific device?

Herdware / Re: Manual for CMD RAMlink?
December 26, 2008, 03:37 PM
The process is completely automated. The caveat being that the paper must be in individual sheets for their feeder but the manual I had with my RAMLink (which I sold and no longer have, sorry) was in a binder and all the sheets could be removed, scanned and replaced without damaging the original. They don't do OCR though. They give you PDFs or jpegs or whatever you want and you can do OCR later if you're so inclined.

Here in Toronto you can walk in to any copy shop and they'll scan documents for a few cents per page and output them to whatever format you want and save the results on a CD. Sending a manual across the ocean to get it scanned is just stupid.

I shouldn't be surprised.

No, it's fine (although maybe it should have gone in Auctions et al but that's another story). I just wondered what was noteworthy about it as there are loads of such auctions.

I was just curious as to what they looked like. By the way, how do you make your attached pictures in the forum clickable?
Use Postimage. It's free, provides those clickable thumbnails and even gives you the code to paste into your messages. Very handy indeed.

The point is that the technology is now fully understood and replicable. Creating a modern 2MB REU replacement is now doable and eslapion was talking about doing just that at WoC 2007. I don't know if he abandoned the idea but he was quite sure he could do it.

P.S. The 1541 Ultimate is like sex in that it's difficult to convey the appeal to someone who hasn't experienced it.
