Thinking about the 1581 Drive Kit from jppbm.com. Has anyone purchased this kit? How critical is it that you get the recommended drive mechanism?

I don't know how critical it is, though I've got to believe they've got a reason for their recommendations.

They're not hard to find. In 7-8 trips to our two local computer recyclers I found 3 of them for a couple of bucks apiece.

I've purchased a few (~50) kits over the years. I wouldn't describe finding the specific mech as critical. It is advisable though as it will make your life a lot easier. Other mechs require modification to the drive itself or you have to screw around to get the eject button to line up etc. It's a PITA.

I tried emailing this guy a while back but he never answered. Is he even still in business? His site is years out of date.

He sure is. Sometimes he's a little slow with the email so try him again.

I emailed him just before ECCC last fall to ask if he was going to be bringing kits to the show. He never emailed back, and I ended up not going. But last week I got an email from him out of the blue asking if I was at the show and whether I got the 1581 kits I wanted. So apparently he's trying to catch up on his email. :)

So what you're trying to say is this "company" still exists, but is not very reliable/efficient/prompt? I can't see paying the Ebay price for a 1581. I'm thinking I could get an MMC2IEC and be happy with that.

Bah. If anyone wants a 1581 kit, let me know and I'll take care of you. I've got a bunch of them sat around doing nothing. If you want a complete, working 1581, that's no problem either.

It would be about $15 CAN for surface (takes 1-2 months) and $30 CAN for air (takes about 7-10 days). I'm fairly certain you won't be able to use the power supply though in which case you'll have to source out your own. The 1581 uses the same PS as the 1541-II so if you've got one of those you'll be fine.

Would those work at 50Hz/220V net power? Otherwise I'd like one.

They'll work but you'll need to find your own power supply. The ones I have are for North America only (as far as I know). Shipping to the Netherlands would be about $20 by surface or $33 by air. Send me a PM if you need more info.

The power North American power supply will work in any country shown in red or orange on this map.  If your country is blue, you'll need to supply your own.  :)

I'm officially rescinding this offer. If you've already contacted me and want a kit, no problem. If you've haven't, sorry. I don't have the time to deal with all the questions I'm getting.

That's understandable...  I'd highly recommend that anyone who wants a 1581 kit contact Joe Palumbo directly.  You can find his e-mail address at the bottom of his main website page at www.jppbm.com.  I've purchased a few kits from Joe in the past, as well as a replacement 1581 motherboard, and I've always received prompt responses from him, and he ships quickly, too.

I've also purchased a kit from Joe a few weeks ago. The power suply I have from ebay. The drive works fine for me, it is the best drive I ever had for my CeVi.
